Review: More from Scottish scene veteran Kevin McKay, who moved into production a few years back following decades spent running celebrated deep house imprint Glasgow Underground. As you might expect from someone of his experience, 'Move Your Body (Elevation)' harks back to the halcyon days of British dance music. As the title suggests, it's a bustling four-to-the-floor house cover of X-Pansions' 1990 rave-era anthem of the same name. Wisely, McKay has included some of the most familiar elements of the original - most notably the vocal snippets and hands-in-the-air piano riff - while completing re-inventing the groove. Remixes come from U.S soulful house sort Rasmus Faber, who first delivers a warm and groovy classic house take before unfurling a sub-bass sporting, riff-heavy Club Dub. Review: Glasgow Underground's Ibiza compilations are traditionally the biggest releases of the year for label head honchos Sam Dexter and Kevin McKay.
It's stated they 'have been working their socks off to collect the best selection of cuts' and aimed squarely at White Isle dancefloors this Summer. Starting off with Sante Sansone's remix for the aforementioned McKay.
This 'Italian stallion' drops his usual disco style for 'What U Want', Barcelona's finest De La Swing impresses us as always with the rolling peak time stomper 'No Rules' and also Vanilla Ace & Dharkfunkh's 'What We Gonna Do?' (Kevin McKay remix) really brings the funk like no other on this disco-fied joint. It's a whopper here: comprised of a few dozen tracks, it's all damn good value and there's enough surefire grooves on here to keep the kids on your dancefloor groovin and movin' all Summer. And if you can't be bothered with all that: it's conveniently mixed up to perfection across three volumes by McKay himself. Review: Vintage deep house imprint Glasgow Underground have largely impressed since coming back from the dead in 2011. Here, label boss Kevin McKay offers a glimpse of what's to come in the shape of four new tracks.
McKay himself kicks things off with 'The Rushes', a bouncy, piano-laden jam that harks back to a bygone age of glistening, rush-inducing house. Small Pyramids go weak at the knees on the sparkling nu-disco/deep house flex of 'The Music', while Franky Redente offers up some more old skool flavas on the piano-laden hustle of 'What U Want'. Proceedings draw to a close with Admin's 'Whatever You Want', a beautiful slice of shuffling deepness that's also the EP's undisputed highlight. Review: The latest instalment in the Toolroom Selector Series comes from none other than Dutch maestro Mike Mago. Over the past six years Mago has risen fast from his roots on BMKLTSCH RCRDS through to last year's Toolroom single The Gift. Now he turns his attention to his first ever commercial mix, bringing a bright and punchy brand of tech house to the fore that reflects his big room instincts.
From Doorly and Full Intention to Kevin McKay and Audiowhores, the quality of the selections doesn't stray off course once in this epic seventy-five minute journey. Review: Steven 'Sugar' Harding and Michael 'Milk' Kronenberger set out their soundtrack for this year's WMC - and this selection has all the makings of an unforgettable party.
The pair's own 'That Body' is a wonderfully soulful house cut, laced with lush vocals and uplifting pianos. On 'Walls', Purple Disco Machine pushes that style into an epic, indie vocal-led direction while at the other end of the spectrum, Monolink's 'Black Day' veers into a slower, smoked out take on modern house.
The pair have dug deep to include tracks from DJ Hal - his 'Don't Give It Up' is given the unmistakable disco touch by remixers Full Intention - while Glasgow Underground founder Kevin McKay also features with the big room 'Love Rights'.
