I have an HP Media Center PC m1270n desktop, I'm running Windows XP on it. I have an HP 2009 m/v/f/ HD Ready LCD Monitor.
The resolution is set at 1600 x 900 @ 60Hz. System was running fine up until Tuesday, Jan. I turned on the computer that morning, I noticed it sounded a little weird, like it was having trouble booting up. The Windows XP screen shows up but when it's supposed to go to the enter password screen before the system actually goes to my desktop screen, the monitoer goes black then I get a message on the monitor screen: Input Signal Out of Range. The computer itself seems to be alright, it just won't show anything after the Windows XP logo screen in order for me to enter my password, etc.I am using a friends laptop now but I really need to get back on my own system. I was able to get enough information by doing a search with the message I recieved on my monitor.
That information just states this could be a problem with the VGA cable or the video card. I checked the other monitors in the house and when I hook them up to my HP desktop, they all get some sort of signal out of range message. When I hooked up my HP monitor to the laptop the signal is fine so I'm assuming the monitor is fine.
How can I tell if it is the video card or if it's a virus doing this?. All I know is, I've had this monitor for at least 6 months, no problem. The connections were fine up until Tuesday. I already tried connecting another monitor to my HP Desktop and I get an Out of Range message with that one. Now when I tried connecting the HP 2009 monitor to my girlfriends laptop running XP, I get no signal from VGA or DVI. When I connect the HP 2009 monitor to a second laptop running Windows 7, it works, however, when I try to access the monitors menu I get another message OSD Lockout. This getting really weird.
I really don't know what I did but it happened in Safe Mode. The first time I changed the resolution in Safe Mode I didn't get anything.
Been up all night trying to figure out why I kept getting no results. I went to the HP site and searched for my monitor model to find out any specific error messages and I came across this one, HP and Compaq Flat Panel Monitors - Flat Panel Monitor Displays Message about No Signal, Signal out of Range, Sleep, or Power Save. Under section: Windows opens, but after a while the monitor displays the message. They mention the sleep mode may have been activated and for some reason the computer didn't awaken from sleep mode.
This could've been the problem. I did what the instructions asked and still no luck. I tried booting up again, pressing the F8 button in order to get in Safe Mode.
When the choice for Safe Mode was visible, I noticed VGA Mode, I pressed enter and all of a sudden, Start up/log in screen is visible again so I entered my password and reached the desktop page, YES!! The only problem, the resolution was too low and everything was big. I was finally able to reset the resolution by way of Control Panel, change resolution. Now, I know I was doing this in Safe Mode once I followed you guys' instructions but it seems the computer was stuck in hibernation. Again, I don't know for sure if that's what got me back at my computer but the monitor is back in action.I really appreciate your prompt responses and your help.
So far, I haven't turned the computer off yet. I'm hoping I don't have any virus or malware that could be changing my settings after I re-boot. I have Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2011, Malware Bytes and Spybot Search & Destroy but they all say I'm virus and malware free.
I'm hoping this doesn't happen again after I turn the computer off. THANKS AGAIN!!!
Was wondering if you can leave this topic open for a few days, just in case this happens again after I turn off this comp and re-boot?Edited by Goldwood, 21 January 2011 - 08:03 AM. @ hamluis, I didn't try Safe Mode until I calmed down enough to try and figure this out. It happened when I was in the completion stage of a project.
I didn't lose any data, just visual problems. I did try everything in Safe Mode once I found out I was able to boot in SM. As I stated in my last post, after I hit the Suspend button (the crescent moon icon on my keyboard) I then followed the change resolution in Safe Mode instructions and then I got a response. Apparently the computer was stuck in hibernation and the monitor wasn't receiving the signal, or someone or some program changed the resolution. Thanks again.
